Three Modes of Entry
TheoryUp offers three modes that operate at different stages of a startup’s formation.
Each mode makes the founding theory about human nature explicit, before ideas, at the idea stage, or in an existing startup.
MODE 1: Founder with No Idea
Makes explicit the assumptions about human nature that a founder is already acting from.
MODE 2: Founder with an Idea
Reveals the founding theory an idea is implicitly testing.
MODE 3: Existing Startup
Identifies the theory a startup is executing in reality.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the three modes?
All three modes operate on the same system. The difference is the stage at which the founding theory is made explicit.
Mode 1: Founder with No Idea
This mode operates before any idea exists. It makes explicit the assumptions a founder already holds about human nature, and surfaces a founding theory that can later give rise to coherent ideas.
Mode 2: Founder with an Idea
This mode operates at the idea level. It reveals the founding theory an idea is implicitly testing, and examines whether the idea is a coherent test of the founder’s assumptions about human nature.
Mode 3: Existing Startup
This mode operates at the company level. It identifies the theory a startup is executing in reality, and exposes alignment or drift between the startup’s current theory and its original founding assumptions.
Each mode provides clarity at a different point in the same lifecycle, before an idea, at the idea stage, or after a startup already exists.
